PDRN is one of the most-studied regenerative skincare actives. It’s used in clinical injectable treatments worldwide, approved as a medical device in several markets, and generally considered one of the safest actives in skincare.
But it’s reasonable to want the full picture before you put anything on your face every day for months. Here’s the honest answer.
Is PDRN safe?
Short answer: yes, for the vast majority of people.
PDRN has been used in clinical settings for over 20 years. The salmon-derived form is purified to greater than 95% purity, with the proteins and peptides that could trigger allergic reactions removed during processing. The molecule itself is similar to your own DNA — your immune system doesn’t recognise it as foreign in the way it would react to a typical allergen.
For topical use (serums, like our PulseRenew), the safety profile is even gentler than the injectable version because you’re working with smaller delivered doses.
Possible side effects
Most side effects of topical PDRN are mild and temporary.
Common
- Mild tingling for the first 30–60 seconds after application — this is the Micro-Spicule delivery technology activating in the skin, not a reaction to PDRN itself. It’s normal and fades quickly.
- Slight warmth for a few minutes after application as microcirculation increases.
Uncommon
- Mild redness in the first few uses, especially if you have reactive or compromised-barrier skin. Reduce frequency to every 3rd night and build up slowly.
- Temporary purging — some users see a brief uptick in small bumps as cell turnover accelerates. This typically settles within 1–2 weeks.
Rare
- Allergic reaction — very uncommon because PDRN is ultra-purified. If you have a known fish or shellfish allergy, patch-test on your inner arm for 24 hours before using on your face. If irritation develops, discontinue use.
If you experience persistent redness, swelling, or burning that doesn’t resolve within a day, stop using PDRN and consult a healthcare professional.
Is PDRN safe with a fish or shellfish allergy?
Generally yes, because the purification process removes proteins (the part of fish that causes allergic reactions). However, individual sensitivities vary. We recommend:
- Patch-test on your inner forearm for 24–48 hours
- If no reaction, patch-test on your jawline for another 24 hours
- If still no reaction, begin using on your face every second night
If you have a severe (anaphylactic) fish allergy, choose our vegan PDRN line (Pure Renew) instead. It uses plant-derived PDRN, no animal inputs whatsoever.
Is PDRN safe during pregnancy?
The honest answer: there are no studies specifically on topical PDRN during pregnancy. This is true for almost all skincare actives — it’s ethically very hard to run pregnancy skincare trials.
The mechanism of PDRN — supporting your skin’s natural repair — has no known reason to be unsafe. It’s not a hormonal disruptor, it’s not absorbed systemically in meaningful quantities, and it’s not in the same risk category as retinoids (which are not pregnancy-safe).
However, because most skincare is elective and pregnancy is precious, we recommend:
- Discussing any new skincare introduction with your obstetrician
- Continuing what was working before pregnancy rather than introducing brand-new actives
- Postponing PDRN until after pregnancy if you have any doubts
The same applies to breastfeeding.
Is PDRN safe for sensitive skin?
Yes — in fact, PDRN is one of the few “regenerative” actives that sensitive skin generally tolerates well. It actually reduces inflammatory signalling rather than increasing it, which is why it’s used post-procedure in clinics.
Start every second night for the first two weeks, then build to nightly.
Is PDRN safe for acne-prone skin?
Generally yes. PDRN reduces inflammation (a contributor to acne), supports barrier repair, and accelerates the resolution of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — all useful for acne-prone skin. It doesn’t treat active acne directly, but it pairs well with the actives that do (Salicylic Acid, Niacinamide).
Is PDRN safe for teens?
PDRN is gentle enough to be used by teenagers, but most teenagers don’t need a regenerative active. A teen routine should focus on gentle cleansing, hydration, barrier support and SPF. Save PDRN for your 20s onwards when collagen production starts to decline.
How long until you’d know if you’re going to react?
Most reactions to topical PDRN show within 24–72 hours of first use. If you’ve used it for two weeks with no irritation, you’re very unlikely to develop one later.
What we do to make sure ours is safe
- Manufactured in Australia under TGA regulations
- 5,000 PPM PDRN — enough to be effective without unnecessarily high concentrations
- Purified salmon PDRN, fish-protein removed
- No fragrance, no essential oils, no known sensitisers in the base formula
- Each batch quality-tested before release
Start gently
The simplest first step is the PulseRenew serum on its own — every second night for two weeks, building up to nightly. Or grab the Skin Reset Kit for the complete routine.
30-day money-back promise. If your skin doesn’t love it, send it back — we’ll make it right.
