Retinol has been the gold standard of anti-ageing skincare for forty years. PDRN is the new contender getting all the press. So which one should you be using?
Honest answer: it depends on what your skin actually needs. Here’s the comparison nobody else writes.
What retinol does
Retinol is a form of vitamin A. When applied to skin, it converts to retinoic acid, which speeds up cell turnover — essentially forcing your skin to shed old cells and produce new ones faster.
- Great for: fine lines, acne, uneven texture, sun damage
- Mechanism: increases cell turnover, boosts collagen indirectly
- Time to results: 8–12 weeks of consistent use
- Common side effects: dryness, peeling, redness, sun sensitivity — the famous ‘retinol uglies’
What PDRN does
PDRN is polydeoxyribonucleotide — fragments of salmon DNA that signal your skin cells to repair, regenerate and produce collagen. Rather than forcing turnover, it works with your skin’s natural renewal process.
- Great for: firming, brightening, barrier repair, post-procedure healing, sensitive skin
- Mechanism: activates fibroblasts, supports collagen synthesis, repairs micro-damage
- Time to results: 4–6 weeks for visible firmness/brightness
- Common side effects: generally well tolerated, even on sensitive skin
Side-by-side comparison
| Retinol | PDRN | |
|---|---|---|
| What it targets | Fine lines, acne, texture | Firming, brightening, repair |
| How aggressive | High — visible peeling common | Gentle — typically no peeling |
| Sun sensitivity | Yes — night use only, SPF essential | None — safe AM & PM |
| Pregnancy-safe | No | Generally yes (consult your doctor) |
| Speed to visible result | 8–12 weeks | 4–6 weeks |
| Sensitive skin friendly | Often irritating | Typically gentle |
Can you use both?
Yes — they complement each other well. The key is to alternate nights. Use retinol one night, PDRN the next. Don’t layer them on the same evening as the combination can over-stimulate the skin.
Pair both with a hydrating serum like GlowSerum the morning after to keep the barrier strong.
Which should you choose first?
Start with PDRN if:
- You have sensitive or reactive skin
- You’ve never used actives before
- You want firmer, brighter skin without irritation
- You’re post-procedure (laser, microneedling, etc.) and need to support healing
- You’re pregnant or breastfeeding (always consult your doctor)
Start with retinol if:
- Your main concern is deep wrinkles or active acne
- You’ve used actives before and tolerated them well
- You’re prepared for an adjustment period
Our PDRN recommendation
If you’re new to PDRN, the PulseRenew serum is the place to start — it pairs Salmon PDRN with Micro-Spicule delivery so the active actually reaches your skin’s lower layers (where it does the work).
Or grab the Skin Reset Kit for the full PDRN routine — PulseRenew + GlowSerum, designed to be used together.
