Vegan Pure Glow skincare — plant-derived PDRN alternative

Vegan PDRN vs Salmon PDRN: what’s actually different (and which is better)?

Vegan PDRN is having a moment. Major skincare publications are calling it “the future of advanced formulations.” Korean brands are racing to launch plant-derived versions. The Innisfree vegan PDRN serum sold out in days when it launched.

So is vegan PDRN actually as good as salmon PDRN? Or is it just clever marketing?

Here’s the honest answer.

First: what’s the difference between them?

Salmon PDRN

Polydeoxyribonucleotide derived from salmon DNA. About 90% molecularly similar to human DNA, which is why our skin cells recognise and respond to it. The most-studied form of PDRN, used in clinical injectable treatments for 20+ years.

Vegan PDRN

Also called phyto-PDRN or plant PDRN. DNA fragments derived from plant sources — commonly ginseng, centella, oat, rice, rose, seaweed or spirulina — designed to mimic the regenerative signalling of salmon PDRN.

Do they actually work the same way?

Research suggests yes — with caveats.

Both forms work primarily by binding to A2A adenosine receptors on skin cells, which triggers anti-inflammatory and regenerative signalling. Studies on ginseng-derived and camellia-derived plant PDRN show activation of the same receptor pathways as salmon PDRN.

The caveat: as of 2026 there are very few published human clinical trials on topical vegan PDRN. Salmon PDRN has 20+ years of clinical evidence. Vegan PDRN has perhaps 3–5 years. The science is promising but younger.

Who should choose vegan PDRN?

You’ll get more out of vegan PDRN if:

  • You follow a vegan lifestyle
  • You have a fish or shellfish allergy
  • You’re uncomfortable with animal-derived skincare for any reason
  • You prioritise the most sustainable ingredient sourcing possible
  • Religious or cultural reasons make salmon-derived products a no

Who should stick with salmon PDRN?

  • You want the most clinically-validated form of PDRN
  • You’re using PDRN for specific concerns (post-procedure healing, advanced anti-ageing)
  • Sustainability is important but you’re comfortable with upcycled animal ingredients

Our take, honestly

Both work. Salmon PDRN has more research behind it. Vegan PDRN is catching up fast and avoids the animal-derived question entirely. For most people, the gap between the two is smaller than the marketing makes it sound — and either will deliver visible results when properly formulated and properly delivered.

What matters more than the source is:

  1. Concentration — enough active to make a difference (we use 5,000 PPM in our PDRN formulas)
  2. Delivery system — how the molecule actually gets into your skin. Without bio-needling or similar tech, most of the PDRN sits on the surface.
  3. Consistency — nightly use for 4–6 weeks beats sporadic intensive treatments.
